Why some iPhone photos won't transfer to your PC
Last updated:
Quick answer: if Optimize iPhone Storage is on, the full-size originals of many photos and videos are stored only in iCloud, and the phone keeps a smaller version. A USB transfer can only copy what is on the phone. Either download the originals to the phone first (Download and Keep Originals), download them from iCloud.com, or use iCloud for Windows.
How Optimize iPhone Storage works
With iCloud Photos on, you choose between two settings in Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Photos:
- Optimize iPhone Storage: when the phone runs short of space, it replaces full-size originals with smaller, device-sized versions and keeps the originals in iCloud. Thumbnails still look perfect on the phone.
- Download and Keep Originals: every original stays on the phone as well as in iCloud.
Optimize is great for saving space, but it means the phone does not have everything. When you connect a cable, Windows only sees what is physically on the phone.
Signs that this is your problem
- The PC finds far fewer photos than the Photos app shows.
- Imports fail on some items or copy surprisingly small files.
- Older photos are missing from DCIM while recent ones are there.
- On the phone, opening an old photo or video shows a progress circle while it downloads.
PhotoFroggy checks this for you: when you export or verify, it lists which items only have their full original in iCloud, instead of quietly copying the small version and calling it a backup.
Three ways to get the full originals
1. Download them to the iPhone first
Switch to Download and Keep Originals, keep the phone on Wi-Fi and charging, and wait while it downloads. This needs enough free space on the phone for the whole library, which is often the problem you were trying to solve. It works well if you transfer in stages: download, copy to the PC, delete, repeat.
2. Download from iCloud.com
Sign in at icloud.com/photos in a browser on the PC, select photos and download them. Good for a few hundred items; slow and fiddly for a whole library.
3. Use iCloud for Windows
The iCloud for Windows app (free in the Microsoft Store) can download your iCloud Photos library to the PC directly from iCloud, no cable needed. Bear in mind it syncs: deleting a photo from the synced folder can delete it from iCloud and your devices.
Before you delete anything
With iCloud Photos on, deleting a photo on the iPhone deletes it from iCloud too, including the only full-size original, if the phone only had the small version. Always make sure your PC copy is the original, not the preview. How to delete safely.
